Morocco is the Maghreb region’s northwesternmost nation. It has land boundaries with Algeria to the east and the disputed Western Sahara to the south. Morocco claims Ceuta, Melilla, Peón de Vélez de la Gomera, and many Spanish-controlled islands off its coast. It covers 446,300 km2 or 710,850 km2 (274,460 sq mi) and has 37 million people. Islam is the official and prevalent religion, while Arabic, Berber, Moroccan Arabic, and French are official languages. Moroccan identity and culture include Berber, Arab, and European influences. Casablanca is its major city.
